Dry skin in winter: a simple routine to protect it
In winter the air is colder and drier, and heaters and hot water draw even more moisture from the skin. The result: tightness, flaking, itching and sometimes cracked hands and lips. The good news is that a simple, regular routine makes a big difference.
Why does skin get dry in winter?
- Humidity drops, so water evaporates from the skin faster.
- Very hot showers and harsh soap strip the natural oils that protect the skin.
- Heaters and warm air conditioning dry out the air in the room.
- Drinking less water in cold weather.
A 3-step routine
- Gentle cleanser: choose a soap-free cleanser without strong fragrance, and wash with lukewarm, not hot, water.
- Moisturiser on still-damp skin: within minutes of washing or showering, to lock water into the skin.
- Sunscreen in the morning: yes, even in winter, because UV rays are present all year.
Ingredients to look for in a moisturiser
- Ceramides: repair the skin barrier and reduce water loss.
- Glycerin and hyaluronic acid: draw moisture into the skin.
- Shea butter and petroleum jelly: form a protective layer, good for very dry areas.
- Urea: helpful for heels, elbows and thick, cracked skin.
Oily skin can also get dry in winter, so choose a light, oil-free moisturiser instead of stopping moisturiser altogether.
Hands and lips
- Apply hand cream after every wash, and wear gloves in the cold and for washing up.
- Use lip balm several times a day, and don't lick your lips, because it makes cracking worse.
- At night: a thick layer of cream on hands and feet, with cotton socks.
Habits that make a difference
- Shorter showers with lukewarm water.
- Drink enough water even if you're not thirsty.
- If you use a heater a lot, put a bowl of water in the room or use a humidifier.
- Wear cotton next to your skin instead of wool if wool makes you itch.
When should you see a dermatologist?
- Severe itching that keeps you awake.
- Cracks that bleed, redness and swelling, or pus.
- Dry patches that don't improve with moisturising after two weeks, because they may be eczema or something that needs treatment.
